Odour Impact Scale

We use the Fraterworks Odour Impact Scale (FOIS) to help you understand the odour strength and impact of our raw materials.

When you have no experience of a product, it can be frustrating when trying to make selections for your various projects; the key to solving that problem is data… lots of it. And so we created the FOIS. 

The FOIS is two scales in one—odour strength and odour impact. Odour strength is how powerful the chemical is when smelled pure. Odour impact is how much of an effect a material has when combined with other materials in a perfume or accord.

We use these two ratings because some materials have quite a mild smell but a strong impact in use—a good example is hedione; it has a soft floral odour but an extraordinary impact in terms of radiance and difussion; a small amount can have a huge impact.
