A large fruiting tree endemic to West Borneo Aetoxylon (also known as Gaharu Buaya or Black Eaglewood) that is becoming extremely desirable as a new wood note in perfume that is particularly synergistic with agarwood and consequently being used in high amounts in Middle Eastern luxury fragrances where it is easier to obtain.

Imagine Oud without the intense animalic quality and you have Aetoxylon. More versatile and appealing even to those who don't normally like Oud. Dress it up for a full Agarwood impression, or use it as it for a lovely complex and little-known wood note.

To ensure the highest possible quality on the market, we supply the finest quality from MANE in Grasse.

    General Information

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    IFRA Standards

    Permitted amounts in finished product:

    IFRA 51: 0.33%
    IFRA 49: 0.33%

These are derived from calculated concentrations which do not replace chromatographic quantification on individual lots. Disclaimer...

    Awakening in a chalet

This essence is beautiful ! I wouldn’t call it white Oud but I can see some similarities. But, as a matter of personal choice I am very found of this essence, and now Oud stays behind in my list. The Aetoxylon brought me back souvenirs of a sunny yet snowy morning in my grandparents chalet. The fireplace that kept us warm during dinner was extinguished and some reminiscences of ashes blends with the Mohagany chairs that got warm by the fireplace. The leathery aspects of the rugs, and the dry wood within the chalet walls after being infused by autumn’s humid air are somewhat within this essence. I am definitely reorder this to try some depth in between this memory and some very skin like accord.

    New leather

This is a very light oud like aroma - more new leather smell without the horse barn old leather smell. Still a bit of that intensity but with more gentle undertones.

    Subtly smoky…

To me, Aetoxylon smells similar to Hiba wood or perhaps a Virginia cedar mixed with a hint of java vetiver. There’s a smokiness to it and it’s delightful. I could see this used in whiskey/rum/tobacco accords. It’s even a bit… fatty? I have Eaglewood by another manufacturer, but it smells nothing like this either. I recently learned that “white oud” is the common name for this material, but this is *not* oud. If you want a no-oud “oud”, then cypriol is closer to oud than this. Adding cypriol could make it oud-y but so could adding osmanthus and hinoki? Either way, this is a lovely extraction. I could see this in a tea accord too.

    Superbly underrated materials

This material is a wood character that is much different compared to Cedarwood. It's much more protruding in character. This is not going to smell like Oud, until you work with it. Blend it with materials such as costus, beeswax absolute, Amyris (alcohol), some moss, Benzyl Acetone for a slightly fruit texture, add some osmanthus for even fruiter and skanky leather. Don't forget Xylenol for medicinal and Para cresols for even more horse! The possibilities are endless
