Musk Ambrette is the fruitiest of the nitro musks and the classical musk that blends best with floral notes. It has an astonishing power to tame and beautify large quantities of coumarin and tonka bean and so became something of a work horse (often in concert with Musk Xylene) in the fougère fragrances of the past. Edmond Roudnitska loved it so much that when he created Eau Sauvage for Dior (which contains no musks at all), he had a special version made with 10% Musk Ambrette. It was his private signature fragrance for the remainder of his life.

Its most famous overdose was in the original Brut where it was used at 13% by Karl Mann for Fabergé in 1964. It is, however, effective at very small amounts. It blends beautifully with the other classic nitro musks which we also stock: Musk Xylene and Musk Ketone.

IMPORTANT: Musk Xylene and Musk Ambrette are prohibited from fragrance use in most countries. At Fraterworks we do not use either of these musks in any of our products. We sell the musks solely so that fragrance aficionados can have access to all the materials of classical perfumery. This should not be used in production cosmetics or fragrances unless you are certain your target market allows it.

NOTE: We package all high odour or high risk materials individually in separate heat sealed aluminium bags to mitigate any risk of cross-contamination.

IFRA 51: Prohibited from use in fragrances

    General Information

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    IFRA Standards

    Permitted amounts in finished product:

    IFRA 51: Prohibited
    IFRA 49: Prohibited

These are derived from calculated concentrations which do not replace chromatographic quantification on individual lots. Disclaimer...

    For Trade Use Only

Our products are intended as building blocks in the perfume creation process; they are not to be applied to the skin undiluted.

These raw materials are for use by the perfumery trade only.

The synthetic musks have no chemical relationship whatever with the odourous principles of musk animal or plant extracts. They owe their name to an odour nuance which they share with the natural products. […] They are […] characterised by a narcotic effect, accompanied, more or less distinctly in each type, by an erogenous and a stimulating nuance.

Musk xylene is the faintest smelling of the three. The narcotic element is relative weak and the erogenous and stimulating notes are quite clear. Musk xylol therefore most closely approximates musk tonquin in odour character.

In musk ketone, the sweet-nutty nose is gentley narcotic, the erogenous and stimulating auxiliary nuances remain in the background. The odour of musk ketone can, therefore, be described as ‘soft’.

The sweet-nutty component of musk ambrette is reminiscent of the odours principle of the ‘plant musk’ ambrette seed oil which has been identified as ambrettolide. Musk ambrette shares with ambrettolide the stimulating more than the erogenous effect. In addition, musk ambrette exhibits a powerful, somewhat balsamic, narcotic note, much superior to in strength to that in the two other synthetic musks and capable of making itself clearly felt in compositions.

I officially hate the government and IFRA.

This is simply the best musk I’ve ever smelled. Just wow. The perfumers of the world lost an amazing molecule when the f*!?*%# powers that be banned musk ambrette. Smelling this now makes me realize just how prevalent it must have been back in the day because it reminds me of stuff I or my dad used to wear.

Yeah, yeah…it’s dangerous. So are alcohol, cigarettes, any food that tastes good….Whatever… ;)

Anyway, thank you Jaime for making this available because it will surely become an essential element of the stuff I make for myself.
