Cade oil is the most common alternative to Birch Tar oil but it shouldn't be seen as the poor cousin. In fact Cade Oil (also known as Juniper Tar Oil) has qualities that, to our mind, can make it a superior option. While Birch Tar oil can have an oily quality (and some low class versions - from other suppliers - a decidedly fishy aroma), Cade Tar Oil is drier and bears a stronger resemblance to a freshly extinguished camp fire, ash and all. It is certainly different enough from Birch oil that interesting and novel accords might be come to by blending the two.

For IFRA compliance this oil is rectified which is a distillation process that removes potential allergens and harmful chemicals from the naturally produced tar oil.

If you prefer something a little different, you might like our wonderful recreation of classic birch tar oil from the 19th century Bouleau Pyrogene 1840 or our exquisite Birch Tar Oil, also from Payan Bertrand.

    General Information

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    IFRA Standards

    Permitted amounts in finished product:

    IFRA 51: 0.25%

These are derived from calculated concentrations which do not replace chromatographic quantification on individual lots. Disclaimer...

    For Trade Use Only

Our products are intended as building blocks in the perfume creation process; they are not to be applied to the skin undiluted.

These raw materials are for use by the perfumery trade only.

Like the smell of campfire in a campground

As a Canadian with a lifetime of wilderness experience and ongoing exposure to many varieties of wood fire smoke I can say that this is a truly exceptional product in terms of its characteristic scent of a burning campfire. While I may not be all that good at finding any likeness between corporate aroma chemical woodsTM and real ones, I do have invested quite a lot of time into experiencing and documenting out-in-the-world raw materials and smellscapes. This is 'burn-ING' wood - the scent of SMOKE hanging in the air of a campground. This is in contrast with birch tar - an equally beautiful material also sold by Jamie - that is more like spent burnt wood or the acrid scent of the inside of a chimney or wood burning oven). Ideally, get them both if you're not so familiar and you will immediately perceive their similarities and differences.
