Trembling beneath the saliferous waters of the Breton coast can be glimpsed long reddish fingers of Palmaria palmata, a precious red seaweed. In Ireland, Palmaria palmata (also known as dulse) has been a staple food for centuries and now, thanks to MANE (the premium supplier of oils and absolutes from Grasse) it finds a new home in the world of fragrance.

Red Seaweed Pure Jungle Essence™ is a jewel in the crown of MANE. While most seaweed materials come with unpleasant top notes, Red Seaweed has an almost gourmand quality, with nuances of fresh barnyard blended with the wild scent of the ancient Celtic Sea.

Jungle essences are MANE's special CO2 products (watch the video clip below for a fascinating look at how these materials are made). This Red Seaweed is a pure jungle essence™ meaning it has nothing added in the making and is the pure essence extracted from the raw material.

Due to its intensity and very high cost, Fraterworks dilutes this pure jungle essence into a more affordable and usable 10% in natural Triethyl Citrate, making it a product that can be used by natural (EU and US) perfumers.

    Origin: Brittany, France

Fraterworks® is strictly a reseller of this product and is neither an agent nor official distributor for Mane.

    General Information

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    Pure seaweed goodness

It does exactly what it says, pure seaweed! These MANE essences are pretty darn amazing. The seaweed smells intensely of the coast. Briny, rich, rock pools at low tide, but not unpleasant. It doesn’t have any rotten smell at all, you can tell they must take care with the whole process. It is on the more expensive side but you definitely don’t need much to get a really natural note, and it is so unique, highly recommend. P.s I wish I could get my hands one of those jungle essence extractors, damn.

    Excellent Seaweed

This seaweed brings me back to the coast, I don't notice any overtly fishy smell. It's violet leaf in kelp form, but even moreso it has a slight gourmand facet and iodine qualities.

My only sadness is that it is so thick, that you would want to dose in small amounts or else it will dampen your top and heart notes and only be smelling the base. Which then turns into an endless cycle of adding more heart and top notes to balance.
On the plus side, this would be excellent in building attars or roll-ons! I applied some on skin with some perfume and its such a gorgeous beauty. I have a powdery and it worked wonders helping to contrast the powdery, sweet smell with a vegetative quality to it.

    The best seaweed

It's really the best seaweed I've ever tried. It doesn't have that unpleasant fishy note of the common seaweeds , and doesn't dominant the composition. It's very impactful,so I diluted it to 1% .

    Outstanding!

What a beautiful material! Upon the first sniff, I was reminded of swimming in kelpy waters as a child. On my second sniff, I thought of the times I've wrapped my own sushi. (Very "edible". It smells clean enough that one could be tempted to use a drop in some ramen broth.)

I haven't tried it in a blend, but there are no fishy off-notes. It's a very pleasant odour with a fantastic richness that could be taken in many directions. It should be incredible for any realistic ocean-themed scent, and I feel it would make for some very interesting novel gourmands.
