Buchu Betulina is a flowering shrub from South Africa (which should not be confused with Korean Buchu AKA garlic chives or Allium tuberosum) with a strong and distinctive odour of blackcurrant (particularly its cat-pee quality) and peppermint. It is not for no good reason that one of the most sulphurous and intense aroma chemicals in perfumery is named after it: Buchu Mercaptan (Thiomenthone).

It has still to find its place as an overdose material though it does make up a distinct part of Tom Ford's Azure Lime (2010), Calvin Klein's CK Free (2009) where it is blended with Juniper, tobacco, coffee and Armoise and Calice Becker's Killing Me Slowly (2014) for Kilian where it combines with Black Currant and Lychee.

Use Buchu Oil to add interesting and natural fruit notes to synthetics or to bring out certain aspects of other naturals.

This Extra oil from Payan Bertrand is superbly extracted, with a particularly refined and almost tamed top note making it far more versatile than those of other manufacturers.

Owing to its high strength and cost, we are also offering this in a 10% solution with natural triethyl citrate (an odourless natural extract from citrus).

Warning: This is a raw material for the manufacture of perfumes. Do not consume. Do not apply directly to skin. Keep out of reach of children.

Fraterworks® is strictly a reseller of this product and is neither an agent nor official distributor for Payan Bertrand.

    General Information

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    IFRA Standards

    Permitted amounts in finished product:

    IFRA 51: Coming Soon
    IFRA 49: Coming Soon

These are derived from calculated concentrations which do not replace chromatographic quantification on individual lots. Disclaimer...

    For Trade Use Only

Our products are intended as building blocks in the perfume creation process; they are not to be applied to the skin undiluted.

These raw materials are for use by the perfumery trade only.

    Fun challenge

Out of the gate, this smells a lot like the crushed leaves of fish mint (dubbed "the cat pee plant" by other gardeners). I don't get the cat smell from that plant or this oil right away. To me, it smells like mountain mint, elderberries, a touch of fresh cardamom muddled with very cold, slightly sulfuric spring water. Metallic, green, sweet and sour. The cat smell comes in whiffs from the strip around the 3 hour mark. At 16 hours, it's more distinct - the metallic, sweet notes are present, but softer.

An analysis for Agathosma betulina (buchu) lists diosphenol, psi-diosphenol, isomenthone, and limonene as the main constituents, along with other minty chemicals and trace mercaptans.

Thank you for supplying this - sharp, complex sulphuric smells are among my favorites (skunk, asafoetida). The challenge is inspiring.
