Think about the difference between holding a lump of frankincense resin to your nose and placing it on a glowing coal. Conventional frankincense oil preserves the bright, citrusy, piney top of the raw resin. Choya loban preserves the smoke — it captures what frankincense actually smells like when it burns. The result is sweet, balsamic, deeply warm, and comforting.
Indian frankincense resin is roasted in a sealed clay pot at high temperature, and the aromatic smoke is captured by distillation. The natural balsamic sweetness of the resin survives the charring process, softening the smokiness into something rounded and approachable. Of the three traditional choya materials — raal, nakh, and loban — this is the most immediately familiar to Western noses.
Use choya loban wherever you want the smell of frankincense incense rather than frankincense oil. It excels in dark amber accords, ecclesiastical compositions, and resinous bases where conventional olibanum feels too clean or too bright. Pair it with labdanum, benzoin, and opoponax for a complete temple-incense foundation, or with styrax for added depth.

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.
All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.
