    Natural Isolates | Patchouli

    CAS: 1450625-49-6

Clearwood® is an all-natural product made by Firmenich to mimic the sweetest and cleanest properties of patchouli oil whilst removing anything even hinting at dirt. This is effectively a natural blend of a selection of the preferred molecules found in natural patchouli.

Rich in patchouli alcohol (patchoulol), Clearwood is closest to our wonderful Patchoulol Crystals PA99 but about half the strength owing to the inclusion of other molecules. It blends wonderfully with Iso E Super and other light wood materials and can be used as a one for one replacer of natural patchouli oil. Use it in traces up to overdose.

According to Firmenich: “Created from white biotechnology, Clearwood delivers all the rewards of modern ingredient design. Beaming with light, it offers the creamy warmth of amber and a dark woody character reminiscent of patchouli.

We also now offer the extraordinary Clearwood PRISMA range, launched by Firmenich in 2024.

Contains 0.05% of Tocopherol as a preservative.

IFRA 51: No restriction for category 4

    Appearance: Colourless liquid
Longevity: Lasts > 180 hours on a smelling strip.

Fraterworks® is strictly a reseller of this product and is neither an agent nor official distributor for Firmenich.

    General Information

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    IFRA Standards

    Clearwood: an excellent base note

Clearwood is a very versatile base note as it is much easier to dose than patchouli essential oil without having patchouli dominate a scent. It adds a very beautiful dry woody note that can project a little bit musky. To me it smells like unburned incense or even a lightly damp forest with a slightly dry phenolic edge. Besides adding a patchouli note to the base of a scent or being incorporated within a patchouli accord clearwood can also be used to add a general pleasant woody note when used in smaller amounts in conjunction with materials like cedrol, a woody ionone, sandalore, kephalis, and others. Clearwood even seems to come through the middle and top notes when used with lavender notes like dihydro myrcenol or tropical fruit top notes. It is a very useful material for creating red accords and red fragrances with ingredients like fructone, red apple, and zenolide. Overall I find clearwood to be most useful for adding a woody or patchouli nuance over the essential oil which becomes overly spicy and dominating at moderately small amounts. There is a strong dryness instead of an intense spiciness.
