Resembling a rodent but related to elephants, the rock hyrax is a wild animal from Africa that marks its territory with a thick pheremone-laden spray which petrifies over time. It is the rock-like nature of the aged material that leads to its nickname: “hyraceum stone”. The animals that produced the fossilised material we tincture at Fraterworks lived hundreds (and even potentially) thousands of years ago.

Hyraceum tincture exudes a wonderfully complex barnyard-like odour crossed with wild homey which immediately transports you to the unspoilt savannahs of Africa. A most interesting and unique animalic, hyraceum blends beautifully with the other classic perfumery animalics.

    General Information

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    IFRA Standards

    Permitted amounts in finished product:

    Ifra 51: Unrestricted
    IFRA49: Unrestricted

These are derived from calculated concentrations which do not replace chromatographic quantification on individual lots. Disclaimer...

    For Trade Use Only

Our products are intended as building blocks in the perfume creation process; they are not to be applied to the skin undiluted.

These raw materials are for use by the perfumery trade only.

    Interesting animalic note

I was interested to smell this, having just come back from a visit to Cape Town. I saw these animals or rather their living descendants, the Rock Hyrax or Dassie, on top of Table Mountain. The tincture to me has a clean carbolic or phenolic tone. It could be a novel note in a mens fragrance. This has already been attempted, notably by Zoologist Perfumes, but there is ample room for further exploration, perhaps in conjunction with castoreum.

    The new standard

This is a rich tincture full of lovely notes of minerals, ink, agrestic aromas and leathery animalics. I have been trying replace my favourite tincture after my source stopped producing for a while... Forget any absolute, this tincture is where it's at! This Hyraceum is gentle at first but has a wild side, and I am sure it will age beautifully too.
