Source: Fraterworks® Givenchy's five-star masterpiece, returned. Discontinued twice — now back in your hands. Lily of the valley meets dark fir balsam.
“True to the 1993 release, it is just as unique and spectacular in 2026.”

    Private Label Collection

    REF: 764516

NOTE: This product is not a perfume; it is a raw compound that must be blended with alcohol and bottled in order to be used. It should not be worn neat on the skin.

This is probably the most demanded perfume compound from Fraterworks customers. Considered by many to be the greatest men's scent, it is a work of art. Alternating with the original Drakkar Noir, this is the fragrance I wear the most. I recommend 18% dilution for personal wear but IFRA compliance requires a lesser amount for sale.

Compound Insense opens with shimmering aldehydes, deep green fir, and bright citrus — luminous, almost crystalline. An extraordinary lily of the valley blooms at the heart, cool and radiant, threaded with sharp green basil. Powdery iris and creamy magnolia support the florals as conifer notes rise from the base.

This is a faithful reconstitution of Givenchy's legendary 1993 masculine — awarded five stars by Luca Turin. The original was discontinued twice, leaving one of the finest men's fragrances ever created nearly impossible to find. Our compound preserves the original's character with the key materials that made it great. Nothing has been removed or reformulated.

This compound is IFRA (but not EU) compliant and ready to dilute and bottle. Just add alcohol.

Top Notes: Aldehydes, Blackcurrant Bud, Lavender, Basil, Bergamot, Mandarin, Lemon
Heart Notes: Lily of the Valley, Magnolia, Iris
Base Notes: Fir Balsam, Vetiver, Cedar, Amber

    Historical Context and Significance

    The Birth of a Masterpiece

When Daniel Molière created Insensé for Givenchy in 1993, he was working in the wake of Dior's Fahrenheit (1988), which had opened the door to experimental masculine perfumery. Molière, a perfumer for MANE with a distinguished if not prolific career — his other notable works include Santos de Cartier (1981), Eau de Givenchy (1980), Guy Laroche Clandestine (1986), and later the cult-classic Tam Dao for Diptyque (2003) — chose to seize this moment of creative freedom and create something genuinely unprecedented: a full-throated, unabashedly floral masculine composition built on a mossy green chypre backbone with fougère elements.

While floral notes had appeared in masculine fragrances before — from Caswell-Massey Jockey Club (1840) through Aramis 900 (1973) and Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel (1975) — no mainstream designer house had ever marketed a men's fragrance as a floral perfume with such directness and confidence. Givenchy positioned Insensé as the masculine counterpart to Amarige, housed it in a distinctive asymmetrical bottle by Pablo Reinoso, and launched it into a market that was about to be swept away by the Calvin Klein cK One (1994) revolution.

    Commercial Failure, Critical Triumph

Insensé was a commercial disaster. Released at precisely the wrong moment — when men's fragrance was pivoting hard towards light, aquatic, and deliberately androgynous scents — its rich, complex, and unapologetically floral character found almost no audience. The advertising campaign, featuring pale, nondescript imagery, did nothing to convey the fragrance's boldness and beauty. As Turin observed, the advertisements made the fragrance seem intended for the timid, when in reality it was one of the most audacious compositions of its era.

Givenchy responded the following year (1994) with a flanker, Insensé Ultramarine, a much more conventional aquatic-marine interpretation that sold far better but bore almost no resemblance to the original's artistry. Multiple further flankers followed through the 2000s, all chasing the aquatic trend. The original Insensé was quietly discontinued.

In 2007, for Givenchy's 50th anniversary celebrations, the house released a reissue within the Les Parfums Mythiques collection — ten classic fragrances that had been discontinued or become difficult to find. The reissue was close to the original, though discernible differences existed upon careful comparison. This too was eventually discontinued, leaving Insensé with the almost mythical status it holds today.

Did you know?: just 50g of Compound Insensé and 200g of Deluxe Perfumer's Alcohol gives you everything you need to fill two 100ml (or four 50ml) bottles at extrait strength.

    General Information

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    IFRA Standards
