Cuir de Russie (Russian leather) is a classic base originating in the late 1800s. First appearing as a fragrance by Amie Guerlain in 1875, Cuir de Russie is a rich and intensely smoky animalic leather with rose and jasmine nuances. It has been used in countless fragrances and upon smelling its influence is clear in Knize Ten by Coty, Cuir de Russie by Ernest Beaux for Chanel, and numerous others.
Cuir de Russie is in the DNA of many Chanel fragrances and may even offer a key to the authorship of Mademoiselle Chanel No 1, the illicit fragrance Coco Chanel had made during the second world war. This enriched leather scent is not far removed from the original Russian Bouquet de Catherine, the fragrance chosen by Chanel to become No 5.
Cuir de Russie can be used in place of birch tar for a sweeter and more refined smoke note.
Fraterworks® Cuir de Russie is a classical leather base. If you are looking for a more modern leather, see our Royal Leather 674276.
