Octinoxate is sunscreen for your perfume, not a scent material. This colourless, low-viscosity liquid absorbs UVB radiation (280–320 nm) before it can break down fragrance molecules. At typical use levels, it contributes no detectable odour to a composition.
Use Octinoxate wherever UV-sensitive ingredients need shielding — citrus oils, aldehydes, and terpenes are the first casualties of light exposure. It's miscible with most fragrance oils and doubles as a co-solvent, dissolving other oil-soluble additives with ease. Simply stir it into your oil phase.
One critical caveat: Octinoxate and Avobenzone destabilise each other under UV light unless a photostabiliser is also present. Add Oxynex ST at just 0.5% to quench this reaction and protect both filters. For UVB-only protection, pair Octinoxate with 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate instead.
Octinoxate vs Avobenzone
Octinoxate and Avobenzone protect against different portions of the UV spectrum. Octinoxate absorbs UVB (280–320 nm) — the shorter-wavelength radiation that degrades terpenes, aldehydes, and other volatile components. Avobenzone absorbs UVA (320–400 nm) — the longer-wavelength light responsible for yellowing liquids and breaking down vanillin.
Octinoxate is a pourable liquid that incorporates instantly; Avobenzone is a crystalline powder requiring heat (80–85°C) and a co-solvent to dissolve. Octinoxate itself can dissolve up to 26% Avobenzone by weight, making it a useful carrier for the powder. However, the two destabilise each other through photocyclisation unless a photostabiliser like Oxynex ST is included as a third ingredient.
With Oxynex ST present (just 0.5% of the finished formula), the combination provides excellent broad-spectrum UV protection for your fragrances.

Octinoxate has a subtle odour profile both when evaluated directly (1/10 strength) and when used in blends (1/10 impact). Useful for adding gentle nuance.

Odour Profile: Octinoxate is a virtually odourless, colourless to pale yellow oily liquid — a functional UVB absorber that protects finished fragrances from light-induced degradation without contributing any noticeable scent.

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.
All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.
