Opoponax Oil is resinous, spicy, and immediately evocative of ancient incense rituals. The distinctive mushroom-earthy undertones emerge quickly, adding savoury complexity that sets this material apart from simpler balsams. Subtle animalic facets provide depth, while a curious broth-like richness (somewhat like vegetable soup or lovage) makes this one of the more characterful naturals in our arsenals.
Often called "sweet myrrh," opoponax belongs to the same Burseraceae family as myrrh and frankincense but offers a distinctly sweeter, less medicinal profile. Where myrrh is sharp and slightly bitter, opoponax is warm and effervescent.
Use it in oriental compositions where its sweet-spicy balsamic character anchors heavier notes, or in chypres where it adds unexpected sweet lift. The mushroom-earthy facet works beautifully in leather accords and dark florals. Blend with labdanum, benzoin, myrrh, frankincense, sandalwood, and patchouli for classic resinous effects. The animalic depth makes it valuable in natural perfumery seeking complexity without synthetic musks.
Opoponax Oil vs Myrrh Oil
These two Commiphora oils share family character but differ meaningfully. Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) is sharper, more medicinal, with bitter-aromatic facets and a drier, more austere profile. Opoponax is sweeter, warmer, more balsamic, with that distinctive mushroom-broth richness and subtle animalic depth.
Use myrrh when you want incense severity and bitter complexity; reach for opoponax when you need sweet balsamic warmth with savoury intrigue. They layer beautifully together, with opoponax softening myrrh's medicinal edge while myrrh adds structure to opoponax's sweetness.

General Information
General Information
Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.
All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.
