Coumarin is a chemical found in plants like melilot, cut grasses, and lavender where it contributes a beautiful hay-like note. It is also the key constituent of tonka beans which are used in France and other places in a variety of pastries and sweet treats.
This coumarin ex tonka bean is the cleanest of our coumarin materials and is highly recommend for both natural and non-natural perfumers alike.
A touch of coumarin can naturalise vanillin giving a truer note of vanilla beans, while an overdose contributes a wonderful and complex note of tonka beans. Interestingly some vanilla extracts (often called Mexican Vanilla) are adulterated with coumarin to make a more “natural” and cost-effective scent. In the US these products are illegal as coumarin is prohibited as a food additive.

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.
All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.
