Diethyl Tartrate opens with barely-there character—vinous, faintly fruity, and pleasantly neutral. Unlike commodity solvents that contribute nothing to your composition, DET adds subtle wine-like body and a caramellic warmth that supports rather than suppresses. This is living space, not dead space.
Derived from tartaric acid—the compound that gives wine its structure—DET shares chemical lineage with grapes and cognac. This makes it the solvent of choice for vintner-style accords where authenticity matters. Use it to add mouthfeel and viscosity to brandy, cognac, and wine notes; pair it with Brandy CO2 for boozy compositions that feel genuinely alcoholic rather than synthetically fruity. The subtle polarity helps sustain volatile top notes that standard solvents would flatten.
Use Diethyl Tartrate as a carrier for precious floral absolutes—rose, osmanthus, boronia—where DPG might mute the sparkling top notes you paid premium prices for. It excels at dissolving difficult crystalline materials like vanillins and synthetic musks, providing a warm, non-chemical solvent profile that vintage perfumers appreciated. Note: DET is polar, making it excellent for absolutes and polar crystals but less suitable for waxy citrus oils.

All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.
