    Costus root oil is one of the most extraordinary essential oils. It was adored by Jean Carles who used 0.6% pure in Miss Dior and it featured in many of the classical bases of the golden age.

    The scent of costus oil is sebaceous, sweet, agrestic, precious wood-like and reminiscent of orris roots, making it a particularly good blender with iris and related materials. Some extractions of costus have a particularly strong almost goat-like odour but the oil we stock is a particularly refined and discreet quality which plays up the precious woods element while downplaying the animalic. This is the most elegant costus we have sampled. It's synergy with the classic Fleur de Tabac base is sublime.

    NOTE: Costus oil has an IFRA prohibited specification so this should not be used in fragrances that are required to comply with IFRA standards.

    General Information

    Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.

    All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.

    The scent is so fascinating. Woody, orris-like (orris butter or resinoid rather than ionones) with subtle sparkly notes. Into the drydown it sharpens somewhat and becomes less fuzzy, but no less beautiful. It could suggest animal fur (though goat may be a bit far) but, if so, it's a nicely clean animal.

    What a loss to perfumery this is.
