Synonyms: Benzcarbinyl propionate, Phenethyl Propionate Classification: Base Note[i]
Phenyl Ethyl Propionate opens with immediate sweet floralcy—not just any rose, but the rich, velvety character of red rose petals warmed by sunlight. This primary floral impression quickly reveals sophisticated complexity: deep fruity notes suggesting berries and stone fruits merge with distinct honeyed sweetness. The material's warmth comes not from spice but from its inherent balsamic-herbaceous undertones, creating a naturalistic depth that prevents it from reading as simple or one-dimensional.
Phenyl Ethyl Propionate is excellent at 0.5-20% when you need to add warmth and sweetness to floral compositions without sacrificing sophistication. Its remarkable blending properties make it invaluable for smoothing transitions between notes—use it to bridge sharp florals with rich base notes seamlessly. In rose accords, it amplifies and enriches rather than dominates, adding the fruity-honeyed facets that transform a basic rose into something luxurious. For Oriental compositions, its balsamic warmth and moderate tenacity provide essential support through the heart notes.
Making Sense of Esters
Understanding the differences between phenyl ethyl esters transforms your formulation approach entirely. The propionate (C3) delivers warm, fruity-honeyed rose with excellent balance and moderate tenacity. The acetate (C2) presents brighter, more volatile rose with green-fresh facets ideal for top notes. The formate (C1) offers sharp, fresh rose with aldehydic brightness but fleeting presence. The butyrate (C4) extends into deeper, almost animalic territory with plum-like fruitiness and longer persistence. The tiglate brings unique green-herbal complexity with distinctive hay-like nuances perfect for natural effects.
Chain length directly impacts volatility and character: shorter chains (formate, acetate) favour brightness and diffusion; medium chains (propionate) achieve optimal balance; longer chains (butyrate) emphasise depth and tenacity. Choose propionate for versatile warmth, acetate for fresh florals, formate for sparkling tops, butyrate for rich depth, tiglate for green sophistication.

General Information
General Information
Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.
All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.
