Cananga oil is not ylang-ylang. They share the same species but come from different varieties, different islands, and different distillation methods. Where ylang-ylang from the Comoros is bright, sparkling, and overtly floral, Javanese cananga is heavy, woody-leathery, and balsamic. The great perfume writer (and spy) Arctander was emphatic: they are not interchangeable in character or in function.
Ylang-ylang is fractionally distilled into grades — Extra, I, II, III — letting you choose brightness or depth. Cananga is a single complete distillation: the whole flower in one oil, from the lightest floral top to the heaviest balsamic base. That gives it a roundness and tenacity that no single ylang-ylang fraction matches. It also survives alkaline conditions, making it far more reliable in soap formulations where ylang-ylang's bright topnotes simply fall apart.
Use cananga oil in leather accords alongside castoreum, labdanum, and birch tar — this is one of its classic roles. It anchors fougères with balsamic warmth and lends lasting power to oriental bases. Think of it as the dark, serious side of the ylang family: less pretty, more powerful, and built to last.

Odour Profile: Cananga oil has a heavy, sweet floral aroma with pronounced woody-balsamic depth, a distinctive rubbery-leathery undertone, and a warm, creamy drydown that is darker and less refined than ylang ylang.

Like most suppliers and makers of quality raw materials for fragrances, we do not filter many of our products. This ensures that no odiferous matter is lost prior to use but can result in the appearance of small particles or slight clouding.
All alcoholic fragrances should be macerated for up to a month and then chilled in a moderate freezer overnight before being filtered fine. This will remove all cloudiness or detritus and is the industry norm.
